Hate That Cat, by Sharon Creech
It was a little awkward reading a booked called, Hate that Cat, but I have to admit I loved that book. Fans of Sharon Creech’s Love that Dog, will remember Jack, the young writer, who was just beginning to explore the power of words. In Hate that Cat, Jack continues to express himself in free verse, while at the same time struggling with the mechanics of poetry – alliteration, assonance, tintinnabulation, similes, and onomatopoeia. As his teacher introduces him to a host of poets, Jack hones his skills, opening up about feelings toward his deaf mother and about the possibility of loving an animal again. This is a great book about the power of words to inspire and evoke emotion. I loved it when Jack thanked Miss Stretchberry for the list of books of poetry and he writes,
I now have
a treasure of words
in
my
room

Jessica – I haven’t read Love that Dog, but it is on my summer reading list. My favorite part of Hate that Cat was as Jack slowly realized that he could give his heart to an animal again, even knowing that someday all pets die. By the end of the book he understands that losing a pet is sad, but the love that it brings to his life is worth the sadness
